Pete became aware of the longstanding community concerns surrounding NEPI and learned that environmental regulators had determined the facility was legally permitted to continue operating in Ivy City. He also learned that the building’s new owner had invested substantially in repairs, ventilation improvements, and efforts to address neighborhood complaints.
Rather than allowing the dispute to remain locked in confrontation, Pete took the time to observe the situation personally, listen to residents, review the available information, and meet directly with the owner. He believed that continued hostility was not producing results and that Ivy City needed a more constructive approach.
As a longtime Ivy City resident, Pete stepped forward to encourage communication, accountability, and practical solutions. His goal was not to dismiss residents’ concerns or automatically defend a business, but to bring the parties together, identify what could realistically be improved, and pursue an outcome that protected both the community and responsible local businesses.
Pete believes effective leadership requires listening carefully, verifying the facts, speaking directly with the people involved, and working toward solutions instead of prolonging conflict.
Pete approached NEPI’s owner not as an adversary, but as a longtime Ivy City resident with deep family ties to the Ward 5 community. He acknowledged the significant investment the owner had made in repairing the building and improving its ventilation system. At the same time, Pete clearly explained that a chemical operation was not compatible with the future residents envisioned for their neighborhood.
Pete did not rely on personal attacks, public confrontation, or hostility. Instead, he communicated respectfully and directly, emphasizing the health, quality of life, and long-term interests of Ivy City residents.
Following those discussions, the owner agreed that relocating the operation was the best path forward and began making arrangements to close the Ivy City facility and move the business away from the neighborhood.
This is the kind of leadership Pete will bring to ANC 5D02: listening to residents, treating people fairly, addressing difficult issues directly, and working toward practical solutions that put Ivy City first.
